This project lives because of the unwavering and generous dedication of the Pratesi Project Team, many of whom have been with us since the first stages of transcription began in 1997, all on a volunteer basis, and all taken by how vivid, how colourful, how human the pages of Pratesi’s life are. The Project has also been financed by various grants including research grants from Victoria College in the University of Toronto, Humanities Research Institute (Brock University), a substantial private donation and the generous funding offered by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada. The Project also benefited from the commendable policy of the Faculty of Arts and Science at the University of Toronto that offers undergraduate Research Opportunity Programs at the second and third year levels. These courses, 299Y and 399Y, permit students to receive academic credit by working closely with a faculty member on a specific research endeavour. The higher level course allows the researcher to bring students off campus for on site investigations. For this Project, six students spent several weeks in Florence, primarily at the Biblioteca Nazionale Centrale, where the staff there provided help and attention beyond any of our expectations. The team, however, was much larger. Many students, none of whom knew of Pratesi nor of Italian literature, came to us thanks to the 600hrs Program in the Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering at the University of Toronto which requires students to participate in volunteer work in their field before graduation. These students formed the backbone of the technical team that prepared the database. Nor could we have done without the Senior Alumni group of the University of Toronto who sent volunteers to help in the scanning of thousands of pages of letters, cards, notes and pictures. We were also joined by some particularly bright and eager highschool students who had heard about the project through U of T connections. This project benefits also from the visionary expertise of the technology department of the E.J. Pratt Library at Victoria University who are the artists and technicians behind the pages you will search through. I would especially like to single out Douglas Fox and also Abe Lam. Nor would they have been able to undertake their technical magic if not for the support that Pratt Library as a whole, and the chief librarian, Dr. Robert Brandeis, in particular. The original letters are archived at Pratt Library. Most importantly, this project lives because of the tireless commitment of my colleague, Dr. Carmela Colella of Brock University, who knows every single punctuation mark, every single letter and every single page as well as I do, if not more. Her technical expertise, her patience, and her love for the world of Pratesi and his friends has been instrumental in bringing this work to fruition, in making it a successful example of electronic publication and research tool. No compliments or words of gratitude will ever suffice to recognize her contribution adequately. And finally, this project lives because of the patience and understanding of my own family who have resigned themselves to the fact that I live and breathe fine-Ottocento. Thank you, di cuore. Questo Progetto esiste grazie alla tenace e generosa devozione dell’équipe di lavoro del Progetto, di cui molti membri sono stati con noi fin da quando nel 1997 sono cominciate le prime fasi della trascrizione, tutti come volontari e tutti conquistati da quanto fossero vivide, colorate e umane le pagine della vita del Pratesi. Il Progetto è stato anche finanziato da vari sussidi che comprendono sovvenzioni per la ricerca da Victoria University presso l’Università di Toronto, il Humanities Research Institute (Brock University), una considerevole donazione privata e il generoso finanziamento offerto dal Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC). Il Progetto ha anche beneficiato dell’encomiabile politica della Faculty of Arts and Science dell’Università di Toronto che offre Programmi di Ricerca (ROP) agli studenti universitari di primo livello al secondo e terzo anno. Questi corsi, 299Y e 399Y, permettono agli studenti di ricevere crediti collaborando a stretto contatto con un docente ad uno specifico progetto di ricerca. Il corso di livello superiore permette al ricercatore di portare gli studenti fuori dall’ambiente universitario per investigazioni sul campo. Per questo progetto, sei studenti hanno trascorso numerose settimane a Firenze, per la maggior parte presso la Biblioteca Nazionale Centrale, dove lo staff ha fornito aiuto ed attenzioni ben oltre alle nostre aspettative. La squadra, comunque, era molto più vasta. Molti studenti, nessuno dei quali sapeva del Pratesi o di letteratura italiana, sono arrivati a noi grazie al programma 600hrs Program della Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering dell’Università di Toronto che richiede ai suoi studenti di partecipare in volontariato nel loro campo prima del conseguimento della laurea. Questi studenti hanno formato la colonna vertebrale della squadra tecnica che ha poi preparato il database. Né avremmo potuto fare a meno del gruppo dei Senior Alumni dell’Università di Toronto che ha fornito volontari per aiutare nella scansione di migliaia di pagine di lettere, carte, note e fotografie.
