Help: How to Search

1. Browsing

Click the "Visualizza il catalogo della corrispondenza" link to view all correspondence in chronological order. You can easily go to any place in the results list using the numbered menu at the top and bottom.

To view an item, click one of the links at the right-hand side. The "page" symbol shows the transcript, the "flower" shows the original page image, and the "folder" shows both together.

To browse the biographies or bibliography, click on the menu so labelled. Most of the transcripts also have direct links to particular entries in these documents, in addition to the regular footnotes.

2. One-word Searches

Enter a term in any of the boxes at left and click Cerca! to search that index.

To find ALL the correspondence of a person, enter the name in Mittente, click the "o destinatario" checkbox, and click Cerca!

The Parola chiave index contains added keywords for topics or persons of special importance.

The Tutto testo index searches the actual text of the letters, including their added titles.

You may limit any search by date simply by setting beginning and end dates. To remove the limit, clear the "Limite alle date" checkbox and click Cerca! again.

3. Multi-term searches

To search for a phrase, enclose it in quotes, for example “Jacopo e Marianna”.

To find letters in which two terms appear (not necessarily as a phrase) enter both in the box.

To find letters in which EITHER of two terms appear, enter them with "OR" between.

To exclude letters that contain a term, place NOT in front of it.

If you enter terms in more than one box, letters that match EITHER search will be listed.
For example, Mittente "Pratesi" with Luogo "Rome" will find all letters from Mario (or Igino) as well as all letters written from Rome.

If you want to find letters that have BOTH the terms, click the checkbox to the right of the term you have entered. (This column is labelled "&".) For example, if you repeat the above search (Mittente Pratesi and Luogo Rome) but click the checkbox to the right of Mittente, you will get ONLY the letters Mario wrote from Rome.
